A doll is a model of a human being which is often used as a toy for children. They have been around for a very long time and are used as both playthings and object of arts. Dolls that are for the purpose of art are called Art dolls and they are created in a wide variety of style either from pre-manufactured or original parts.

The while some toys are mass produced, the production of some requires a lot of skills, some of them including sculpting, costuming and painting. Art dolls are made from materials like fabric, paper clay, wax, hair (natural or synthetic), wool etc.

They are packed in coffin-shaped boxes and also come with death certificates. Each living dead toy has a different cause of death, which is usually described on the certificate. They are aimed at an adult audience aged 15 years and above. The toys are distinct in the sense that they were not connected to other existing doll theme.

Paper dolls

They are figures cut out of paper or thin cards with separate clothes which were also made from paper. These clothes were attached to the toy with the use of paper folding tabs. They can be designed to be a person, an animal or even an inanimate object. They are a cheap variation of playthings for children as they can be easily replaced. The paper toys gained popularity in the 1920s and are still around till now. Now, paper figures especially the vintage ones have now become very much sought after and is now used as a collectible.

Russian nesting dolls

They are also known as Matryoshka figures. They are a set of wooden toys of decreasing size placed one inside another. Matryoshka means little matron. A set of matryoshkas consists of a wooden figure which separates the top from the bottom, to reveal a smaller figure of the same kind inside, which has, in turn, another figure inside it. Traditionally, the outer layer is a woman, dressed in a sarafan- a long, shapeless traditional Russian peasant jumper dress. The figures inside may be of either gender, the smallest, innermost toy is typically a baby turned from a single piece of wood.
